MemoryGallery.jpg

This image is from a wall at the Galeria de la Memoria Tiberio A. Fernández in Cali, Colombia.

The gallery began 18 years ago as a research project that investigated systematic cases of human rights abuses committed by the Colombian state (often with U.S. aid and weaponry).

Today the space provides refuge for children and other victims of the conflict to help with the healing process and preserve memories through art. In addition, the gallery works to denounce state-sponsored crime and creates more visibility of systematic persecution of human rights defenders.

Despite undergoing years of threats, the gallery still continues its mission. In this amazing space, art is not produced for consumption as part of the capitalist system, but is used as a tool of reformation.
